Concentration #6

Watermelon

  1. I think this looks really good, the light sections are curved in such a way that the watermelon looks round. I really like the brown center; it is a strong focal point. I also love the dark crisscrossing lines; they add cool texture. The only thing I would say is I think it might help the watermelon to look even more round to have a shadow on the bottom. I know when you painted it, you may have had it tilted with direct light on top of it, but I think a shadow on the bottom would make it look even more round.

  2. I agree with Laura, it could use a rounded shadow at the bottom to *really* emphasize the roundness, but it really looks great otherwise!

  3. I think the colors and the texture work really well together, and the whole composition is well balanced. I agree with Laura and Georgia that some more shading would help create a better sense of space.

  4. I'm also in agreement about the comments on added value to your work. In addition, I also would add that I would want to see you develop the background more fully. If you mixed a darker wash of watercolor, you could lightly paint in a thin wash around the light areas to create greater contrast and this would also be a way that you could add a shadow around the watermelon. You are doing a great job and I enjoy seeing the process of your investigation each week. I challenge you to not be afraid to add greater darks to your work! What is the worst that will happen? :)
